On April 20th, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold went on a shooting spree in their own high school. Both boys were very different, Dylan was a typically positive boy who wanted to gain love and companionship. Eric, by far the ringleader, was extremely negative and often remained secluded in his room. During their mass murdering Dylan and Eric killed 13 people and wounded more than 20 people.
Among many theories, both Eric and Dylan had been victims of bullying and it was speculated that they acted upon this, violent video games and movies were also blamed for the shooting, and being a part of the “Trench coat Mafia” was thought to have influenced them. None of these theories was ever proved to be the concrete reason for the killings. For a year they planned elaborately to create mass destruction and devastation.
They planned to place two propane bombs in the cafeteria, however neither bomb detonated and threw off their plan. After the failure of the bombs the two boys went in themselves and began shooting the school. The boys blamed everyone in the school for their thoughts, thus the shootings were random, not having specific targets. Most of the victims were located in the library, where Dylan and Erik would eventually fall to their hands as well.
After the shootings school in America began using “zero tolerance” rules. Since then many schools have upped their security and have trained teachers and students on the proper steps of action if there is every a gunman within their school.

Between 1924-1930 Chicago went through a phrase of lawlessness and it was the result of the passing of the Prohibition. One of the major gangsters that took advantage of the demand for the now illegal alcohol was Al Capone. He was one of the most successful gangsters of all time and was worth around $100 million during his prime. Capone was extremely deadly in nature and was the mind behind the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. He and his men had been the assassination target of his rival George “Bugs” Moran and Capone had had enough. Planning the event from Florida, Capone ordered the assassination of Moran, but got seven of his men instead. Moran narrowly escaped the attack missing by being just a few minutes late. On the 14th of February 1929 on the North Side of the city, Capone’s men dressed as policemen shot the seven men to death in a garage. While the event was never officially connected to Capone, he was considered to be responsible for the action.
The 1960’s were known as the Hippie era and the greatest event to occur during the time period and perhaps the history of America was Woodstock. On Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy farm in 1969 during a three-day span from August 15-18, commenced the largest and most revolutionary festival in the world. Woodstock was a music festival organized by John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfeld, and Mike Lang, all of which were under the age of 27. Woodstock became a place for the Hippies to go and live in the atmosphere they most desired. The festival featuring musicians such as Santana, Janis Joplin, Grateful Dead, and The Who brought in an unanticipated 500,000 people. The expected number of participants was 50,000, but because of the lack of gates and security, there was nothing stopping anyone from showing up. In fact, two days before the event even started there were approximately 50,000 people already camping out. The event could have actually had even more participants, but the police turned away nearly half of the 1 million people that made their way to the farm. The event became extremely disorganized due to the massive crowd of people. Highways entering the town became literal parking lots, because there was nowhere to go, people abandoned their cars in the middle of the road and walked out to the farm. It was so bad they had to hire a helicopter to get the artists to the stage.
Woodstock lost its original intention of being a fundraiser for the young men to buy a recording studio and soon became famous for the pure essence of the Hippie movement it possessed. The event became the icon for the Hippie movement due to the uncontrolled actions of the attendees, which included sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll, the slogan of the Hippie era. The most commonly used drug within the gates of Woodstock were marijuana and LSD, which made a major entrance during the 60’s era. The drugs stuck and have been commonly used since. Woodstock was perhaps the greatest festival and movement icon to ever exist in the United States, making it extremely prevalent in the area of substance crime.

Charles Manson is known for being connected to the killing of Sharon Tate as well as other Hollywood residents, however he was never actually found guilty of committing the murders. Manson is attributed to leading The Manson Family, which included him and several loyal murders. Together they are known to have killed 35 people, however the number isn’t completely certain because most of the murders weren’t tried because of lack of evidence. Manson was in and out of jail until he was released on March 21, 1967. In the following year he became known as one of the most infamous figures in criminal history.
Contributing to the time period of the 1960’s, Manson and his “family” began using hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD. The family soon moved to San Francisco, and soon to San Fernando. The group attributed their work to a famous song from the Beatles called Helter Skelter. Helter Skelter was the name from the Beatles song that referred to the British amusement-park ride of that name and was interpreted by Manson and the family as concerned with the war. Through the remainder of the 1960’s the Manson Family continued their murder spree killing several people.
All of the murders that Manson and ‘The Manson Family’ committed were all in preparation for Helter Skelter. Through the Beatles song, and the book of Revelation in the bible, Manson believed that there was going to be some sort of apocalyptic war between the whites and blacks because he believed that both the song and the book in the bible were code for such a war. Manson had these thoughts about the upcoming war, and finally connected the thoughts he had from the song and book and referred to this event as Helter Skelter. He instructed his followers to begin their murders for Helter Skelter on August 8, 1969. Although, the spree ended quickly on January 25, 1971, when Manson was tried and charged for first-degree murder for the Tate-LaBianca trial. He was sentenced to death, however after California invalidated their death sentence, it automatically changed to life in prison.
